A Shocking Discovery

Beads of perspiration trickled down his face. The intense heat of Egypt would have made him turn down the decision, had he not thought about how important is was to find the tomb of a ruler, which was said to have ruled the whole of Egypt before any other king, Professor Scuffing wiped the sweat off his face with his hand and stabbed the shovel into the ground and continued digging. Then, 13 year old girl walked out of the tentment nearby carrying a glassful of water. As she walked towards Professor Scuffing, her golden hair danced in the air gracefully. She handed the Professor the glass of water with a smile famous towards her father, the professor himself.

“Ah, thanks you very much Alexi,” the professor took a huge gulp of water, “I hope the heat here does not bother you too much my darling,” he continued. Suddenly, a worker ran towards the professor and Alexi and in between gasps, he said, “ The….The tomb…..I think we found it.” Upon hearing those words, the professors eyes lit up and he and Alexi followed the worker as he ran towards the site of the discovery. Alexi and her father elboured their way through the crowd of workers where the worker had brought them only to find part of a hand-curved stone block on the floor. The professor examined the stone and stood up, faced the crowd and said “This is it! This is the tomb!”

Excitement filled the air as the workers frantically dug their way through the ground to expose the entrance. After what felt like an eternity, the entrance was finally revealed. However, the entrance was too small for anyone to enter. As the professor and the workers brainstormed on how to enter the tomb, one came up with an idea of getting Alexi to enter the tomb and before she knew it, all eyes were on her. She sighed and said “ Okay, okay!” She grabbed a torch light and squeezed herself into the entrance, She walked down a narrow tunnel and found herself face to face with a tunnel fork. However, she noticed one of the tunnels to be decorated with gold. It was obvious to here that that was the route.

Alexi found herself in a hallway and at the end was a magnificently decorated sarcofagus. Behind it were heaps and piles of jewelry and gems. However, she suspected that the place was booby-trapped . No one would let anyone take away their treasure from them so easily. She picked up a stone on the floor and threw it across the room. Darts flew all across the room. Not good. She thought no othe way than to run across the room, dodging the darts. She tookd a deep breath and sprinted across the room, hearing the darts whiz behind her and finally, she made it alive. A loud boom echoed above her and light shone into the room. Alexi looked up only to see her father and the workers peering down. “How did you know I was here?” Alexi questioned her father. “Simple, you watch acan be tracked, anyway, let’s get you out of there,” he replied and threw a rope down.

New of their discovery spread like wild fire across the world and at the party held in the museum of Egypt, where the discovery was brought to, they were more than just celebraties. “ Wow, I guess this is what it’s like to be a celebraty!” Alexi said. Professor Scuffing took a sip of champagne and said. “ I guess so.”

The Flag

The Flag

The siege was ready. Archers took their places behind the swords, men, creating the troops invulnerable to both ranged and melee attacks. I sat on my horse in full steel armour, one hand carrying the flag of our country, the other carrying the royal ruby-encrusted sword that made its way into my hands through the passings of many generations. Laddenmen, who would help create entry into the enemy’s castles walls, stood next to my army. Their faces were filled with fear and worry. These men were not trained to fight, however, they would give us the upper hand in conquering the city. Taking one last look at our flag, I raised it up high into the sky lefting it soar in the winds of Britain and in one lung-full, I shouted the signal everyone had been waiting for,”Charge!”.

My men and I charged over a small hill to find the enemy’s castle being protected by their own troops. No matter how many men stood in our way, we would sldy them all. I rushed through the enemy’s army, slashing at the sides of my horse taking down a few of their men. However, I ran out of luck. An arrow whizzed through the air and stabbed into the chest of my horse, My horse jumped up and stood on its hind legs, neighing in pain. I lost my balance and fell back onto the muddy ground. As I tried to get back to my feet, I spotted one of the enemy’s men lunging towards me with his sword. I did a parry and got up before he could do anything. A series of parries and lunges happened between the duel but a riposte sent my sword straight into his chest, ending his life. This was it, first blood, now the siege had begun and I was sure we would win…….

Disecting a Pig's Heart at low budget!

This is a genuine pig's heart.(im not a serial killer!!!!!)
the pig's heart was at a reduced price of $1.84.probably the pig,who is currently in heaven(probably having wings)is quite angry at the price, saying"my life does not cost a mere $1.84!!!!!!"

This is my first time disecting an organ. It was fascinating to see the atriums of the pig's heart. But to be frank, it is pretty smelly. . I can't wait to disect a fish...

Memories of Zach

There have always been flashes of memories of my dear friend, Zach, shelved in my mind. I can still remembered that incident vividly, as if it happened yestereday. As a matter of fact, it happened ten years ago. Zach and I were very close friends, but that day, death separated us.

“Is everyone set?” Zach asked. Everyone including me nodded in high-spirits. It was another Sunday and we were doing our usual thing, cycling. As soon as we were about to set off, Zach was already cycling at break-neck speed. During the cycle, Zach said that he was feeling a little fatigue and wanted to head to the back of the group. But that was when disaster struck.

At that time, a bus, after being fully loaded with passengers started changing lanes to head down the stretch of road. And before anyone knew it, Zach was thrown head first on the road due to the massive wheel of the bus that had come in contact with Zach’s bicycle. Unfortunately, Zach fell right below the bus’s right front whet and he was dragged to about seven metres from his bicycle, leaving nothing but a stain of fresh red blood on the road.

The noise from the bus’s engines had completely covered Zach’s excruciating screams of pain. The bus swerved to the side of the road and stopped, leaving Zach’s scream to pierce through the air. We heard his screams and we swerved to stop. We ran to scene and to our horror, I found Zach lying under the bus on a pool of blood. His upper body was stripped bare of his clothes and his skin was torn to the flesh. Passers-by immediately dialled for the ambulance.

In no longer than fifteen minutes the wailing of sirens could be heard in the distance. The ambulance arrived at the scene and extricated him by lifting the bus with air bags. We were sent into the ambulance and we waited for the ambulance to reach to the nearest hospital as his life hanged in the balance.

At last, we had reached the hospital. The nurses rushed Zach into the “OR” Operating Room. I wanted to follow but, the nurses pushed me back even before I took a step into the room. They told me to wait for them and that they would do their best to save Zach. I obediently stepped back and took a seat on one of the benches located near the “OR”. I prayed for what felt as an eternity before the doctor came out. The doctor sighed and shook his head before heading back into the room. I could not believe it. Zach was dead. Tears flowed freely down my cheeks as memories of Zach and I flashed in front of my eyes. Out friendship….all gone. He had left this world leaving me behind….all thanks to that bus driver! That….that insolent fool! I clenched my fists. But I knew it was not going to help. Poor Zach, I am sorry that you died and I wish you a happy life, I thought….

That day left me with hatred and sorrow that scarred my heart dearly. Zach thanks you for all the friendship and love you have given me. I will never forget you……

SORROW

I can still remember vividly the day a mother died, in fact it was my friend’s. Although she was not my relative, I was greatly affected by the news. Somehow, I felt a “connection” between me and my friend, Jake. Maybe, there was a possibility that we were brothers…….
.
“Jake! can we leave now? I am bored to death!” said John, a friend of mine, who was part of our group that suggested that we spend a picnic out at East Coast Beach. “Soon! Just some sandwiches and we are ready,” replied Jake. A few moments later, we were armed with sandwiches, muffins and others, and were heading down the beach ready to rule it.
.
A few of our members setup the mat on the lush green landscape, whereas we unpacked the food. Soon enough, we were ready to sink our teeth into homemade sandwiches and others of some sort. But then came a phone call for Jake that would turn this event around.
.
Suddenly, a loud ring pierced through the air and we all traced it back to Jake. Jake, embarrassingly stood up and walked away to answer the phone call. We ignored him and started wolfing down the sandwiches. Every sandwich eaten, released a temptation to eat twice the amount. A few minutes later, we had finished all of them and were quietly waiting for Jake’s return but it did not happen. Instead, I heard someone crying from a distance. I turned around and only to find Jake, with tears flowing freely down his cheeks, sitting next to an oak tree.
.
I slowly approached him and consoled him by patting his back. I asked him in my most caring voice “what has happened?” and in between sobs, he said “ I…..I received a call from the ….the hospital…..” he inhaled heavily, trying to swallow the huge amount of mucus stucked in his nose and continued..” They said that…that my…mo..mother has pa…passed away because of a car accident. “ With that, tears flowed down his cheeks more heavily, as if they were driven by a hurricane and he started breathing heavily. I continued patting his back to console him but it was no use, grief had over whelmed him.
.
We had no choice but to cancel the picnic and send him home. Our hearts were torn to shreds as we all headed home individually. Nothing was happy at all. On the day of his mother’s funeral, we were all invited to come. Invited, with hooks hung in our hearts as we saw Jake’s family being overwhelmed with grief. Our heads’ hung at our necks, hoping for nothing but to see Jake happy once again. But it seemed impossible.
.
On that day, our hearts were scarred dearly as we all saw grief itself, but in a form that could not be explained, it was just too overwhelming, just too powerful to control, it was the infinite amount of love between a parent to a child being converted into an infinite years of grief and regret. I just could not believe it, the power of love that could change our lives greatly, for love is what we must cherish……………..

ROBBERY

“How much for this 24 carat diamond ring?” Mr. Tan asked. “It costs 150 hundred dollars, sir”, replied the salesgirl. Mr Tan was finding a perfect ring for his proposal to his future wife. Mr Tan took another glance at this diamond ring, admiring it beauty as it glittered through his stubby glasses . Perfect! Everything was going well and that might was Mr Tan’s last date with his future wife before their marriage. He held the key to that event in his hand, the diamond ring.

Mr. Tan returned the right to the salesgirl and said,” I’ll have this one.” The salesgirl immediately took the ring from his hand and asked, “ Is this ring used for a proposal?” Mr. Tan frowned and nodded. “I’ll put his ring into our special box for you.” The salesgirl said with a smile. Instantly, Mr. Tan liked the service and wanted to find our more about their other services. “May I ask, what…….”but before Mr. Tan could continue, the door swung open.

Three large men carried sacks and a long machete. Seeing the machete, Mr. Tan stood rooted to the ground and his jaw dropped. He could not believe that he was at a scene of a robbery on his very special day. It had all turned into a catastrophe. After recovering from his shock, Mr. Tan knowing what he had to do to stop the robbers, immediately screamed for help. But before he could do so, the robber carrying a machete ran towards him and held him up by his tie. While pointing his machete at Mr. Tan’s head, he warned him with a string of abusive words. Mr. Tan knowing that he was on the edge of a sword stood where he was, empowered by the robber’s machete.

The robber’s two companions shattered the glass panels show casing the expensive jewellery and thrashed them into their large sacks. The other worker of the shop squatted at a corner of the shop, too shocked to move as if they were paralysed. Mr. Tan seeing the other robbers thrashing in more jewellery was ready to risk his life. He screamed at the top of his lungs for help once more and closed his eye, knowing that the robber would kill him.

After what felt like eternity, Mr. Tan suddenly felt the tug of his tie loosening, he opened his eyes and to his surprise, the robberies started to flee out of the shop. But that still was not good enough. Mr. Tan gave chase to the robbers but once the robbers were at the doorway, they were given an unfriendly greeting by the police. The robbers knowing that they had lost themselves to the police dropped the sacks of jewellery worth five million dollars.

After the police had taken the robbers away, Mr Tan who stood at the entrance of the shop, waited for the lady to pack the diamond ring that he had ordered earlier. Soon, the salesgirl came out of the storeroom, carrying a box that would make any women happy. As Mr. Tan fished out his credit card to the salesgirl, she smiled sweetly and thanked. “Thank you, sir for saving us all.” Upon hearing the salesgirl words, Mr. Tan started to blush. No longer than 3 minutes later, Mr. Tan was out of the shop and his way home.

Two weeks after the incident, Mr. Tan sat newt to his wife, he had married two days after the incident, reading a newspaper article about the robbers, who were sentenced to life imprisonment with no parole“. Serves them right to do such things”. Mr Tan muttered under his breath.

Listening To A Friend

“Alvin, why did you follow your friend?” These very words from his mother ringed in his ears as his sore bottom, red hot with pain, seared through his body. All of this would not have happened if he had not followed his friend, Nick. Hr felt that he was so stupid at that time to accept Nick’s suggestion to vandalise the toilet. Alvin knew that it was a serious offence to vandalise, but he did not notice at that time that he was doing something wrong, instead finding it ‘fun’.

It all started that day, at recess. Alvin was having his break when Nick asked him if he would like to join him to do something, he had with him crayons and felt-tip pens. Alvin agreed, while on their way to nowhere, Alvin asked Nick “where and what are we going to do?” But, Alvin’s words were interrupted with, “just follow me and you’ll know” by his friend. Alvin frowned.

Alvin and Nick stood in front of the deserted toilet. All they heard was dead silence. The toilet was mostly deserted due to the rumours of that toilet being haunted. But both Alvin and Nick knew that did not exist. Nick, who immediately opened the old wooden door of the toilet, was greeted with a tingling sound of the creaking door. Alvin could feel a cold sensation trickling down his spine as he followed Nick into the old toilet. The toilet had not changed since they last visited two years ago in primary four.

Alvin, in an instance, asked Nick,” Okay, we’ve reached our destination so now, you better tell me “What….Are…..We…..Doing?” Alvin said, broadly. “We’re going to vandalise this toilet, anyway no one hardly entered this toilet.” Nick replied. Upon hearing the word vandalise, he mustered up all his courage and rejected Nick’s suggestion. However, Nick persuaded him.

“Okay, fine!” Alvin said, frowning. He picked up a felt-tip pen and started drawing a crude picture. I’ll only do it once, he said in his mind. But, his promise was broken. They unleashed their creativity by drawing more than just crude pictures, abusive words. Little did they know what would happen to them.

Suddenly, the door creaked open and in came two prefects. In an instance, pens and felt-tip pens dropped to the floor. Nick knew that he was ‘sitting ducks’ and so, rained several punches on the prefects bringing them to the ground. Alvin dropped his jaw in awe as Nick tried to escape. But he was caught by Mr. Tan , the discipline master of the school, by the collar. Soon, they were both sent to Mr. Tan’s office and were reprimanded severely, followed by caning. When the first stroke landed on Alvin’s bottom, red hot pain seared through him. Burning and tearing apart. At last, they hung their heads in shame as they were sent to see their parents and so, that was where it ended.

From then on, Alvin learnt a valuable lesson. Listening to even a good friend means that you are ready to take a hefty consequence. In every subject, there is a pros and cons and we must measure them well. Alvin regretted listening to his friend and that incident was etched in his life forever…………….

An incident at the Zoo

“Sir, would you like to buy a cookie? It’s only a dollar each. Every single dollar will be donated to the zoo in its efforts to save endangered animals.” I said politely to the tourist. It was the school holiday and my school had selected a few pupils, including me to take part in the animal fund raising programme. The first few days went pretty well, so I predicted that everything would go well that day. But I was wrong. It was a disaster.

After what seemed like an eternity, I almost finished my share of work. Putting a bright smile on my face, I continued selling the remaining cookies. “Sir, would you………” before I could finish my sentence, a high-pitched screams echoed the Zoo. It sent shivers down my spine. Suddenly, I felt a pat on my shoulder, I turned around only finding my friend, Fredrick, panting with exhaustion. He opened his mouth and in between heavy pants, he said,” A jaguar has escaped from its enclosure. It’s heading this way”.

I stood rooted to the ground, utterly shocked. My jaw hanged from my skull. After I regained control over my body, many tourists and visitors were running away as quickly as possible towards the exit. Before I knew it, the jaguar was in sight. The zookeepers were already putting up blockades to block the jaguar from going any further and some carried rifles and surrounded the blockades before shooting at the jaguar with tranquilizer darts.

Although the jaguar had a very slender body with biceps bulging from it front arms, the hail of darts were too much for it to take. No longer than a minute, the jaguar lay onto the floor motionless, in deep sleep.

The jaguar was placed on a truck in a cage. I wanted to continue watching the truck thinking where they might send the jaguar to. But it had turned around the bend and was no longer in sight.

The next day, the incident had already made headlines” Jaguar escapes at S’pore Zoo, visitors evacuated”. I started to ponder, how it came out. The incident remained a mystery but still if there was anyone who caused such trouble, the person ought to pay the price.

However, the news stated that the jaguar was being provoked by some visitors. It got angry and broke through the glass enclosure. This created havoc to the other tourists and visitors. The enclosure had been cordoned off to all visitors and tourists and the jaguar was put in a special cage and under close watch.

My Erhu Idols' Leaving Singapore

25 May 2008, It was the BEST CHINESE MUSIC CONCERT I EVER ATTENDED. It was my Erhu teacher's concert “Musical Ties”at SCO ,featuring his wife and father, who was a famous Huqin (Erhu,Gaohu,Zhonghu) master in HK. To me, My teacher and his father were musical prodigies, or musical maestros. Well, that all adds up to good music just like a few of the pieces such as,"Liquormania",another piece that sounded like Arabian music and a complimentary piece,"Horse Race". Wanna know something? They are Wong Sun Tat(my Shi Fu), Wong On Yuen(my Shi Fu's Shi Fu)and Yu Jia (My Shi Fu's wife). You should see how their fingers move. One of my favourite was “Flight of the Bumble Bee” Teacher Wong Sun Tat and his wife played in HK (seen inYoutube). I have seen many of his concert in Youtube and was motivated each time I see him play.

Thing turned into disaster a few days after the concert (i am not referring to the SiChuan incident). When i came back from my Shi Fu's class, it was ok but at the end of the lesson, he told me that he would be leaving Singapore for at least 6 months. (Compo style)I stood rooted to the ground,jaw hanging from my skull, tears welled up in my eyes but they refused to flow out.I was partially in a state of shock.It was fate that brought him to me! I have sometime felt rather tired in my Erhu lessons, and wanted many times to give up. But if it wasn't for "HIM", i wouldn't have gotten a distination at Grade 3 in Erhu. He is a Great Teacher I really want to Thank him for the last 2 years of Erhu teaching. Although he may be fierce, he hides a purpose behind every word he says. THANK YOU TEACHER WONG SUN TAT & Shi Fu's Shi Fu and Shi Mu !!YOU ARE ALL MY IDOLS.........

“Environment” And The High-Tech Trash

Being the first class to attend the Science Centre Lecture on "The Environment" was thrilling. We learned many things about the enviroment and how they affected us. We knew, after being lectured there, that our carbon monoxide emissions (cars, buses, etc.) are causing the global catastrophe, Global Warming. Thanks to “we” stupid humans, who generally want money, our existence and others without caring that we share Mother Earth with our primates and other animals. We, citizens of Mother Earth are only leaving the jobs of cleaning up our mess to the scientists. As Wei Chong said during the lecture: “Kill humans! It’s the only way to stop it!” It’s true, we should be punished. Every single garbage bag is considered a year’s savings for a poor family. Can’t you see? We are wasting more than what MOTHER NATURE has expected. And, every single bag of trash is so useful that it may also turn into a dynamo. We have cracked our lives and we do not want it to shatter.So please, it’s just as simple as the 3Rs nothing more than that. Reduce, Reuse & Reduce !

Now, I’m going to tell you guys the fate of high-tech trash that causes damages to Mother Nature. When we upgrade our electronics goods and throw always the old models, a growing percentage are recycled but most goes to landfills, with a tiny fraction incinerated. Personal computers and other electronics contain parts that pose no danger in daily use but become toxic without proper disposal. *PVC-Incinerating this can produce highly toxic dioxins.
*Brominated Flame Retardants- This group of compounds may cause thyroid damage and harm fetal development.

*Lead – A neurotoxin, it also harms the kidneys and reproductive system. Even low-level lead exposure can impair a child’s mental development.
*Mercury- linked to brain and kidney damage: harmful to a developing fetus. It can be passed through breast milk.

*Cadmium – Long term exposure to this carcinogen damages kidneys and bones

My dedications to my teacher.

My ambitions are to become a doctor and a licensed surgeon, while keeping maths as one of my hobbies. Hopefully, here’s how my life would lead:
After graduating from EPPS with a good result in the PSLE exams, I will be heading to NUS high. After graduating from there, as usual, I will be sent to NS as a medic. After NS, I will be leaving Singapore for The John Hopkins University in the US to be both a doctor and a licensed surgeon.
MY OBJECTIVE
-To find a cure for AIDS (I already have a solution in my mind)
-To save many, many lives.
- (Hobby) discover a new formula that can find the unknown from the known.
MY DEDICATIONS
But all these can only be made possible under the guidance of Mr. Wan. Without his guidance, I may never succeed. He is the most caring teacher, in a way that he cares about us, like, explaining to us about the questions that we are not sure with, telling us the secrets behind Singapore, giving us math shortcuts, but ultimately, his words of encouragement can resurrect anybody who feels down. Plus, in the darkest times, he can shine light to anyone’s path of their career or goal. In my eyes, Mr. Wan is the most impressive and the most caring teacher I have ever met in my whole life. Despite being the fiercest teacher in EPPS, his anger was used to help people instead of ‘kill’ people. I can see that his anger was also used to bring the better out of people. Nevertheless, his anger showed me his wanting for us to have great futures. His greatness is beyond speak able or even writeable. His name will be etched in my life forever.

What is DNA?

DNA,or Deoxyribonucleic acid is a nucleic acid that contains the genetic information about your whole body. You may be shocked to know that your DNA is only made up of 4 proteins are Adenine, Cytosine, Guanine and Thymine, which make up the letters that you see in some DNA charts, A, C, G and T.

What are genes?

A gene is a unit of the DNA which contains the information about your traits.Traits, or heredity was founded by Greger Mendel,who studied the growth of peas near his church(he was a priest). He is also the man behind the chromosomes Y and X.

What are chromosomes?

Human cells contains two sets of chromosomes, one set given by each parent. Each set has 23 single chromosomes--22 autosomes and an X or Y sex chromosome. A normal female will have a pair of X chromosomes; a male will have an X and Y pair.
